Outfall pipeline installation – Wylfa, North Wales

30 Jun 2016

In May, Murphy Land & Marine completed the installation of a 330m long pipe-in-pipe outfall at Wylfa Power Station on Anglesey.  This project was awarded by Costain Ltd on behalf of the main client Magnox Limited.  Following design and engineering carried out at our Bromborough base, the pipeline was constructed onshore in nearby Holyhead Harbour before being towed by sea to the site in Cemaes Bay.

LMR Drilling were subcontracted to drill from within Wylfa power station through the rock, exiting on the seabed in around 20m of water.  Land & Marine’s barge, LM Constructor received the tow and attached the pull head to the drill string which had been recovered from the seabed before the 80Te drill-rig was used to pull the pipeline into the drilled hole.  The installation of an onshore tie-in spool-piece was followed by hydro-testing before the offshore spread was deployed to install the diffuser pipework, protection dome and scour mattresses.  Onshore reinstatement followed and the works were completed on time and to the satisfaction of our client. A great team effort all round!
